Benesch Welcomes New Partners in Chicago

January 18, 2018

Benesch is pleased to announce three major additions to the firm’s Chicago office. Litigation attorneys David A. Rammelt and Dawn M. Beery and commercial real estate attorney Michael J. Klein have joined the firm.

David A. Rammelt is a partner in Benesch’s Litigation Practice Group, where he serves as Co-Chair of the Business Litigation Group, and Chair of the firm’s Products Liability Practice. His trial practice is focused primarily on complex business litigation, products liability litigation, and intellectual property and sports litigation. He joins Benesch from Reed Smith.

For over two decades, David has represented more than 100 public and private companies and has served as lead trial counsel in more than two dozen jury trials, class action lawsuits, TRO and injunction hearings, and binding arbitrations. He has tried or successfully resolved cases for clients in a variety of matters involving banking and finance, toxic tort, securities fraud, breach of fiduciary duty and shareholder disputes, antitrust violations, unfair competition claims, patent and trademark disputes, distributor disputes, real estate disputes, consumer class actions, products liability and warranty litigation, and contract disputes. David has appeared in more than 100 state and federal courts throughout the United States.

David received his J.D., cum laude, from Indiana University Maurer School of Law in 1990 and his B.A. from Hamilton College in 1986.

“We are thrilled to have David join us. He is a nationally recognized litigator whose experience enhances our already top-notch litigation group at the firm and continues the extraordinary addition of litigation talent to our Chicago office,” said Joseph Castrodale, Vice-Chairman of the Firm, Chair of the Litigation Department at Benesch and a member of its Executive Committee.

Dawn M. Beery, a partner in Benesch’s Litigation Practice Group, also joins us from the Chicago office of Reed Smith. She focuses her practice on complex commercial litigation and products liability litigation. Her commercial litigation practice includes unfair and deceptive trade practices cases, business tort cases, breach of contract cases, and partnership disputes. Dawn also has experience with securities litigation, fiduciary duty litigation, construction litigation, antitrust litigation, and trademark and technology litigation. Dawn’s products liability practice includes the defense of consumer products, industrial products, pharmaceutical products, and medical devices.

Dawn has been lead trial counsel and co-trial counsel in multiple jury trials, which resulted in very favorable outcomes for her clients. She has managed all aspects of complex commercial litigation, including pre-trial evaluation, traditional discovery, e-discovery, mediation, trial, and appeal. She conducts a national practice, having represented clients in lawsuits in state and federal courts in Chicago and across the country, including California, Florida, Texas, New Jersey, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Ohio.

Dawn received her J.D., cum laude, from Northwestern Pritzker School of Law in 1998 and her B.A. from Indiana University in 1995.

Michael J. Klein is a partner in Benesch’s Real Estate & Environmental Practice Group and has significant experience representing clients on all aspects of real estate transactions both within the US and internationally, including commercial, industrial, R&D, lab, office, warehouse, hotel and retail leasing, acquisitions, dispositions, development, financing, construction, entitlements and workouts. Mr. Klein also has significant experience negotiating commercial agreements, including distribution, supply, licensing, confidentiality, franchise, property management and service agreements. Michael joins us from the Chicago office of McDonald Hopkins.

Michael received his J.D. from the University of Illinois College of Law in 1994 and his B.A., with distinction, from the University of Illinois – Urbana-Champaign in 1991.

“As our Real Estate practice continues to grow throughout the country, we are pleased to have Michael on our team and an expanded presence in Chicago,” said Jeffrey Wild, Firm Administrative Partner, Chief Strategy Officer, Chair of Benesch’s Real Estate & Environmental Practice Group and a member of the firm’s Executive Committee.

We are also very pleased to announce that Stephanie S. Penninger, a member of the firm’s Litigation and Transportation & Logistics Practice Groups, was named a partner of the firm on January 1, 2018.

Stephanie S. Penninger began her tenure with Benesch almost seven years ago at the firm’s Indianapolis office. Now located in Chicago, she focuses on representing motor carriers, third party logistics providers, ocean transportation intermediaries, national shippers, large private fleets and water carriers in the domestic, non-contiguous trade lanes concerning transportation and logistics matters, including: providing counseling concerning maritime and admiralty law issues and regulatory compliance, handling maritime casualty matters, drafting ocean transportation service agreements and prosecuting and defending freight charge disputes and cargo claims for loss, damage or delay.

Stephanie received her J.D. from Michigan State University College of Law in 2005 and her B.A. from University of Michigan in 2002.

“Our focus has been to grow our core practice areas and to expand in our markets. The firm’s growth in Chicago has been excellent and we look forward to adding more talent and experience as the year progresses,” said Gregg Eisenberg, Managing Partner.
